Legal MIDI Resources
Where to find MIDI you can actually use, and what each source's license actually says.
Drum Looper lets you import your own MIDI files and play them back in the app. This page is a directory of sources where MIDI may be legitimately purchased, downloaded under an explicit license, or obtained from an official creator, publisher, or public-domain/open-license project. It isn't a place to download files from Drum Looper itself — every link below goes to the source's own website — and it isn't a guarantee that every file on a linked site is fine for every use. Review the specific terms before you use a file, especially commercially.
A composition and a MIDI file are not the same thing
A musical composition can be old enough to be in the public domain while a specific MIDI arrangement, performance, or edit of it still carries its own separate rights or license. The file is its own thing — check the terms for the specific MIDI file you're using, not just whether the underlying song sounds old or famous.

Mutopia Project
Mutopia Project
A library of classical sheet music editions, each published under Public Domain or a named Creative Commons license, with a MIDI rendering provided alongside the score for most pieces.
License
Each piece states its own license: Public Domain, Creative Commons Attribution, or Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike. Commercial use is permitted under all three; the CC licenses require attribution to the original editor/contributor.
Commercial use
Allowed under the license stated for that specific piece — check the license shown on the piece before use.
MIDI files are computer-generated, notation-derived renderings meant as a reference — not performance recordings.
Splice
Splice (DCI Sounds)
A subscription sample and MIDI marketplace. MIDI patterns and files are explicitly named as licensed catalog content alongside audio samples.
License
Splice grants a non-exclusive, perpetual right to use downloaded sounds and MIDI in your own music productions, for commercial or non-commercial purposes. Reselling, redistributing, or repackaging the files in isolation — for example into a new sample or MIDI pack — is prohibited.
Commercial use
Allowed for use within your own music productions under the stated license. Not permitted to be resold or redistributed as standalone files.
A Splice account/subscription is required to download content.
Toontrack
Toontrack Music AB
Commercial drum and instrument MIDI packs — including grooves for EZdrummer and Superior Drummer — sold under a stated end-user license.
License
Toontrack's End-User License Agreement permits using purchased MIDI content in your own musical arrangements and recordings, commercial or non-commercial. It prohibits extracting or reselling the MIDI files themselves as standalone content, and prohibits using the content to train AI models.
Commercial use
Allowed for your own musical works under the stated license. Reselling or redistributing the MIDI files themselves is not permitted.
Purchase required. Review the current EULA before use — terms can change.
Wikimedia Commons — MIDI files
Wikimedia Foundation
A category of over 1,000 MIDI files within Wikimedia Commons, the Wikimedia Foundation's shared media repository. Every file hosted there must carry an explicit license permitting reuse.
License
Commons only hosts files under a license that explicitly allows commercial use, republication, and derivative works — non-commercial and no-derivative licenses aren't accepted. Each file's specific license (public domain, or a named Creative Commons license) is shown on that file's own description page.
Commercial use
Allowed by site policy for every file, since commercial-use restricted licenses aren't permitted on Commons at all — but the exact license and any attribution requirement still vary per file. Check the individual file page.
A general media repository, not MIDI-specific — use the MIDI files category or Commons search to find files.
How sources are chosen
Each source above was checked against its own terms of service, licensing page, or FAQ before being listed — not assumed from a search result or a third-party list. A source is only added once its current terms are specific enough to describe accurately; when licensing looked unclear, contradictory, or simply couldn't be confirmed, it was left off rather than published with a guess. Sources are re-checked periodically, and each entry above shows when it was last verified.

Drum Looper doesn't own, control, or vouch for these external sources. Availability and license terms can change after this page was last checked, and rights can differ between individual files or works even on the same site. Review the current license or terms for the specific file before using it, especially for commercial projects. Nothing on this page is legal advice — it's a starting point for finding legitimate sources, not a substitute for reading the terms yourself.
